When celebrity homes – a blend of luxury and uniqueness invest in a house, they want to make sure the interior is as luxurious as the exterior. With the exception of a few modernist structures (like Drake’s Toronto mansion, pictured above), most celebrity homes are filled with rich materials like exotic wood, stone and bronze. They also tend to be filled with timeless styles, such as Jacques Adnet armchairs and Mies van der Rohe tables.

In fact, some of the homes on our list are so opulent that the average American would have to work for several lifetimes to afford them! Our research shows that, on average, the celebrity homes we studied cost more than twice as much as the national median home price.

The homes often reflect the celebrities’ personalities, too. For example, Jennifer Aniston is drawn to “warm, organic and tangible materials.” When she designed her LA estate with architect Stephen Shadley, they opted for custom pieces and antiques rather than mass-produced items. This allowed them to create a house that feels authentic and not contrived.

Likewise, George and Amal Clooney’s villa in Laglio, Italy is inspired by the couple’s love of Italian culture and cuisine. It features a pizza room, a 300-seat theatre and even farm animals and bees to produce honey. Our research also found that nearly a third of the celebrity homes had swimming pools. Almost all had some kind of sports court, and more than half had golf courses. For brands, this translates into the need to target luxury consumers who exhibit a high need for uniqueness. Managers can do so by designing pull-type marketing campaigns that appeal to this consumer segment, and by offering products that differentiate themselves from the competition in a unique way (like the bronze and gilded elements in Drake’s Toronto mansion).
